About East City C.A.R.E.

East City C.A.R.E. stands for Community Action for Resilience in Emergencies. We are a neighbourhood-based initiative in East City, Peterborough, bringing people together to build connection, belonging, and practical resilience.

We believe one of the strongest ways to prepare for emergencies is simple: know your neighbours before a crisis happens.

Whether it’s a storm, a flood, a long power outage, or just a hard season in life, communities are stronger when people are connected.

WHO WE ARE

East City C.A.R.E. is a neighbour-led effort focused on building a more connected and resilient neighbourhood. Our work is rooted in the idea that emergency preparedness is not only about supplies and plans, it is also about relationships.

When neighbours know each other, they are more likely to check in, share information, offer support, and make sure no one is left behind.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR

Over the past few months, neighbours have come together through a series of community gatherings to talk about connection, belonging, emergency preparedness, and what we learned from recent storms and power outages.

We have held 4 neighbourhood meetings that have brought neighbours together to connect and learn. These gatherings included neighbourhood mapping, local conversations, storm reflections, hazard awareness, and practical discussions about 72-hour emergency preparedness.

Strong community interest from residents, local organizations, and city-wide partners.

Growing momentum around preparedness, neighbour support, and neighbourhood resilience.

What became clear is this: many people want to help, many people want to feel more connected, and there is a real need for a trusted way to connect neighbours before emergencies happen.

That is why we are launching Hey Neighbour in partnership with Community Care Peterborough. An initiative that is inspired by the Hey Neighbour Collective.

Hey Neighbour

Hey Neighbour is a new pilot program created by East City C.A.R.E. in partnership with Community Care Peterborough. The goal is to connect neighbours in practical, caring, and safe ways, especially those who may be more vulnerable or isolated.

Through Hey Neighbour, local residents can sign up to be matched with nearby neighbours for:

- Friendly phone calls
- Neighbourly check-ins
- Neighbour-to-neighbour connection
- Emergency Check-ins
- A stronger sense of belonging in the community

Why Hey Neighbour Matters
When environmental emergencies happen, people can become isolated very quickly. Power outages, communication disruptions, severe weather, and mobility challenges can make everyday life much harder, especially for seniors, people with disabilities, people living alone, and others who may already be at risk of isolation.

Hey Neighbour helps build the relationships that make a difference when it matters most.

This is not only about emergency response. It is also about creating a neighbourhood where people feel seen, connected, and supported in everyday life.

If you are looking to connect with neighbours in a meaningful way, this is a great way to get involved.
